Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

There are many reasons why you could experience tooth loss. Periodontal disease, facial trauma, normal wear-and-tear, and aging can all lead to the loss of a tooth. When you lose a tooth, it can have wide-ranging implications for your mouth. In addition to the altered appearance and loss of social confidence that may occur, your other teeth can come out of place and your bite can become misaligned. In addition, your jawbone health can suffer as a result of a missing tooth.

A dental implant is a functional, strong, and long-lasting tooth replacement option. During the appointment, a titanium tooth root replacement is inserted to your jawbone where your original tooth root was. Over time, this implant fuses to your bone, anchoring firmly in place.  A dental crown is then attached to this implant, effectively serving as an original tooth.

Who can benefit from dental implants?

Dental implants are a perfect way to replace a missing tooth. In addition to replacing an individual tooth, dental implants can also serve to replace several missing teeth or even a full set of teeth. All-on-4® dental implant treatment is a special method whereby a full or partial arch of teeth is anchored in place using four strategically placed implants.

Dental implants are also a great option if you’re unhappy with the fit or feel of an existing denture or dental bridge. In order to receive dental implants, your jawbone must be strong enough. Some people first need a bone graft in order to strengthen their jawbone. The team at SEDA Dental will work with you to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.

What should I expect at my appointment?

The team will install your implant in several stages. Initially, SEDA Dental may extract a tooth or complete a bone graft in order to prepare for the dental implant. During the procedure, they will numb the area that is to receive the tooth. You may also receive general sedation in order to ensure your comfort. The team will make an incision into your gums and then install the titanium post into your jawbone.

Once the implant has fused to your jawbone, a process that usually takes several months, the team at SEDA Dental will place your restoration on the implant, completing the process.
