NEW HOPE FOR THE LOWER DENTURE
Why is the lower denture more difficult to wear than the upper denture?
There are 2 simple reasons:
- The lower denture does not have as much surface area to absorb the heavy pressure of chewing. It does not have the additional area that the roof of the mouth provides for the upper denture, and this means the lower denture can be dislodged more easily.
- The tongue is a very active muscle that constantly dislodges the lower denture. That's why the lower denture often tends to "float" - allowing food to get underneath it.
SO WHAT CAN BE DONE ABOUT IT?
DENTAL IMPLANTS!
Dental implants can be placed in the lower jaw to solve these problems. Two metal fixtures are placed in the jaw. The denture fits over the dental implants and are attached by special attachments called locators.
